I’ve been on vacation in Grimstad, South Norway (the exact QTH is 6-7 km from the seaside). Here is what I heard on the bands (all times UTC):


FRI 15 JULY

Before sunset (2020)

1825 1660 Radio Barones SIO 333 (two hours before sunset!). 1859 'Geluid van stilte', SIO 444!
1923 1630 Radio Barones with his usual kind of music (pop, rock ...). S4. 2025 (after sunset): S5
2007 3065 Unid. radio hooligan playing a few Russian records. Poss. ID at 2010. S2


SAT 16 JULY

After sunrise (0248)

0302 6950 Captain Morgan SW with blues and canned IDs. Gmail address. The strongest AM signal I have heard from an American pirate! S2-3
0351 6925U Unid. stn with music. Very weak. Poss. Renegade Radio. S1

Before sunset (2019)

1758 6920 Geronimo SW with Dave Scott playing classic rock and plugging BDXC and WDXC. Good presentation and music! Gone by 1850, so probably a test. SINPO 43333. Noted on 6255 at 1942.
1947 3081 Unid. radio hooligan playing a few Russian records (chansons à la Vladimir Vysotsky, pop...). Announcements in Russian at 2005 and 2037. S2-3
2016 3141 Radio hooligans (at least three) QSOing. OK signals.

After sunset

2039 3151 Unid. radio hooligan calling cq. ('Dmok'?) S3
2152 3080 Unid. radio hooligan calling cq (?) S2-3
2157 6990 Unid. stn playing rock mx. 2214 jingle ('... Radio'). S1-2
2204 3067 Radio hooligans (four?) QSOing. Good signals. I hope to be able to ID some of the 'hooligans' at some point (I know someone in Ukraine...).


SUN 17 JULY

Before sunrise (0250)

0212 6950U Wolverine R., tent. Strange music and whispery IDs ('... Radio'). Reported as UNID elsewhere, but some say ID sounds like Wolverine Radio, and I agree. S2, splatter from LHH on 6945
0241 6930 Irish Music Radio playing blues, ghospel, rock 'n' roll... Well presented by OM. S3-4

After sunrise

0302 6945 Laser Hot Hits with 'The Anorak Hour' (Pink Floyd, Laser 558 recording...). S4
0320 6960 Atlantic Radio: 'All the Young Dudes'. 'Life is Life', 'Sunday, Bloody Sunday'... I never hear any DJs on this station. Perhaps I'm listening on the wrong time of day... S4. Surprisingly strong signals from the Irish stations this early morning!
0604 6200 Radio Orang Utan. 'With Or Without You', 'Don't Want Your Love Anymore', 'Una Paloma Blanca', 'I Want to Break Free', Dutch and German music... Telephone number. Cool to hear Orang Utan again! He was one of the first pirates I heard and QSLed back in 1993! SINPO 34433, good, clear audio.
0621 1512 Zanussie, tent. 'Mooier dan rode rozen'. S2
0621 1602 Radio Waddenzee. 'Je ne regrette rien'. S4 (not a pirate - included for comparison).
0621 1620 Unid. stn - probably Zonnester with his usual Sunday morning broadcast. S1-2
0659 5815 Orion Radio Nederland. Signature tune at 0703. Instrumentals. Greetings to people. Jingles. 'I Started a Joke', 'Free Electric Band', 'Hier is Studio B' (another one of those pirate songs). Finnish ID. AM Forum ad. Offshore Echoes ad. SINPO 45434
0727 1675 Orion West heard briefly before he signed off. Possibly a cq. Only S1-2, but readable,
0727 1627 Alpenjager, Northeast Groningen with reports for Zonnester, Kleine Vogel, Firma Noordzee and Jeneverstoker. S2-3, 100 % copy! (I tend to hear stations from Groningen and Friesland fairly well in Grimstad all day through.)
0734 6290 Alpenroos playing Dutch music. Talk in Dutch and English. Very good signal, but 'muffled' audio. S4-5
0856 6220 Bogusman with indie mx and talk. Ment. possibly misheard line in song. New Fast Automatic Daffodils: 'Stockholm'. Poem by the Ghoul at 0908. SINPO 22432, splatter from a pirate on 6216. 60-70% copy.


MON 18 JULY

Before sunset (2015)

1756 1620 Zender Carolina playing a march and a waltz and asking for a report. S2-3
1756 1640 Relmus – 'van de puntje van de pier'. 'Can’t Buy Me Love', 'I'm a Train', 'Have You Ever Seen the Rain', 'Weather With You'. ID at 1827. Ment. Wadloper, Santos and Fox 48. S3
1811 1650 Rode Ster playing reagtime-ish mx and giving a report to a station whose name I didn’t catch. S2-3. Weak stns noted on 1650 and 1656 – possibly in QSO with Rode Ster.
1958 1657a Unid. stn QSOing with two slightly weaker stns. S3-4 (the others: S2). Unid. language – but probably Greek (I’ll ask a language expert…).
2007 1633 Vrije Vogel (I think) with a long music programme. Dutch mx. 'Rose Garden'. Greetings to local listeners. Telephone number. S3
2007 1653 Napoleon. Dutch music and oldies. 'Have You Ever Seen the Rain', 'Whisky in the Jar' (Thin Lizzy). Op talked a lot. Greeted international listeners. S4, good modulation.
2012 1670 Admiraal asking for a rpt. Later QSO with Soerabaya and others. Later on 1662 with ID in EE. S4


After sunset

2027 1641 Soerabaya with a report for Admiraal. Played ‘Telstar’ (Tornados). S2
2039 1625 Soerabaya with a few records. 'Telstar'. Polka. Said it was a small test. S2-3, splatter from 1633.
2050 1645 Radio Telstar with a few records. S3-4


TUES 19 JULY

After sunset (2014)

2051 1636 Vrolijke Mijnwerker with a music programme. Dutch mx. Telephone number. S4, thunderstorm crashes
2054 1641 Kristal asked for a report. Dutch mx. S4, thunderstorm crashes, splatter from 1636 and 1645
2055 1645 Radio Telstar. Dutch mx. S3, thunderstorm crashes

Explanation: A radio hooligan is a pirate (usually just QSOing and usually using a mixture of AM and FM) from Russia or the eastern parts of Ukraine.

RX: Sangean ATS 909
ANT:
- From Fri to Sun at 0600: 50m wire 0.1-1m above the gnd + balun – 290/110 degrees (east coast NA / Ukraine/Russia – should work as a beverage on 6.9 MHz, I think)
- From Sun at 0600 to Tues: 50m wire 0.1-1m above the gnd + balun – 210 degrees (approx. English Channel)
